Magnitude 6.2 earthquake in Greenland Sea

Magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck area of Norwegian sea on Thursday, May 24, 2012 at 22:47:46 UTC. The epicenter was located  601 km (373 miles) NW of Tromso, 676 km (420 miles) WNW of Hammerfest,  716 km (444 miles) NNW of Bodo, Norway and 1472 km (914 miles) NE of Reykjavik, Iceland (72.994°N, 5.651°E) The depth of epicenter was 8.8 km (5.5 miles) according to USGS. First reading was 6.5 magnitude. It was followed by magnitude 4.7 earthquake at almost the same location and depth.

Ridge earthquake (separating tectonic plates) occur between Jan Mayen Island and Spitsbergen. It caused no damage because of the big distance to the nearest populated continent or islands.
The earthquake may have been felt in the north of Norway. This earthquake was too weak to generate a tsunami.

  1. The news in the UK rarely covers earthquake stories nearby. We in the UK would not have a clue what to do if there was a Tsunami. We have had no such training. The government need to take the threat seriously.
