Moderate geomagnetic storm in progress (June 7, 2013)

A moderate G2 Geomagnetic Storm (Kp=6) is currently in progress due the arrival of the fast flow from the low-latitude coronal hole at the northern hemisphere. Bz component of Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) has been tipping sharply south for several hours. Southward Bz's often herald widespread auroras, triggered by solar wind gusts or coronal mass ejections that are able to inject energy into our planet's magnetosphere.

G2 Geomagnetic Storm can cause power grid fluctuations and high-latitude power systems voltage alarms. HF (high frequency) radio propagation can fade at higher latitudes. Satellite orientation irregularities may occur, with increased drag on low Earth-orbit satellites. During G2 Geomagnetic Storm, aurora may be seen as low as New York to Wisconsin to Washington state so aurora watchers, stay on alert.

More disturbances are expected for June 8, 2013 due the arrival of the fast flow from the small equatorial coronal hole. Also, two possible CME impacts are expected to deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field on June 8, 2013.  A bright coronal mass ejection (CME) was launched into space by M1.3 solar flare which erupted from Active Region 1762 on June 5, 2013. NOAA/SWPC forecasters estimate a 65% chance of geomagnetic storms on June 8, 2013.
