Floods continue in south east Asia – Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam
Heavy monsoon rains are causing more flooding in south east Asia. Myanmar officials reported on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, that severe flooding caused nearly 25 000 people to evacuate in Karen State, eastern Myanmar. Heavy rains and landslides are making flood-hit areas difficult to reach.
Myanmar was badly hit in August 2012 when about 85 000 people were displaced by floods caused by unusually heavy monsoon rains.
In Thailand, three people have died since Monday after they were hit by trees felled by fast-moving water. Seven thai provinces remained flooded today.
Flooding is also threatening Vietnam, where one person has died, and eastern Indonesia.
Monsoons, or rainy seasons, are a shift in wind direction which causes excessive rainfall in many parts of the world including Asia, North America, South America, and Africa. The primary mechanism behind a monsoon is a shift in global wind patterns.
