New flyover video of Red planet's surface
New compilation video from images taken by ESA’s Mars Express spacecraft was released online on October 28, 2013. This video is compiled from images of nearly 12 500 orbits by the Mars Express, gathered from June 2003 by the High Resolution Stereo Camera. Images were used to create digital topographic models of almost the entire surface of Red Planet.
The video was released by the DLR German Aerospace Center as part of the ten years of Mars Express celebrations. The music has been created by Stephan Elgner of DLR's Mars Express planetary cartography team. DLR developed and is operating the stereo camera.
Featured image: 8000-metre-high flat-topped mountain in Hebes Chasma, made up of mineral deposits stacked in almost horizontal layers. The darker areas visible in the image consist of volcanic sand, which is found in various places at the bottom of the basin and also incorporated in the sediment mountain itself.
