Major solar flare peaking as X1.1 erupted with Earth directed component

Another major solar flare erupted from AR 1890 which is now located almost at the center of the disk. The latest eruption event started 04:20, peaked at 04:26 as X1.1, and ended at 04:29 UTC.

A Type II and IV Radio Emissions were associated with the event indicating a strong Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) and solar radiation storm were associated. A 10 cm Radio Burst (TenFlare) reaching 1000 Solar Flux Units and lasting 5 minutes was also associated.

The location of AR 1890 is almost perfect for Earth directed eruptions and it seems we might get a glancing blow late November 10 / early November 11.

SUMMARY: X-ray Event exceeded X1
Begin Time: 2013 Nov 08 0420 UTC
Maximum Time: 2013 Nov 08 0426 UTC
End Time: 2013 Nov 08 0429 UTC
X-ray Class: X1.1
Optical Class: 2b
Location: S14E15
NOAA Scale: R3 – Strong
Potential Impacts: Area of impact consists of large portions of the sunlit side of Earth, strongest at the sub-solar point.
Radio – Wide area blackout of HF (high frequency) radio communication for about an hour.

ALERT: Type IV Radio Emission

Begin Time: 2013 Nov 08 0424 UTC
Description: Type IV emissions occur in association with major eruptions on the sun and are typically associated with strong coronal mass ejections and solar radiation storms.

***

ALERT: Type II Radio Emission
Begin Time: 2013 Nov 08 0424 UTC
Estimated Velocity: 800 km/s
Description: Type II emissions occur in association with eruptions on the sun and typically indicate a coronal mass ejection is associated with a flare event.

SUMMARY: 10cm Radio Burst
Begin Time: 2013 Nov 08 0424 UTC
Maximum Time: 2013 Nov 08 0425 UTC
End Time: 2013 Nov 08 0429 UTC
Duration: 5 minutes
Peak Flux: 1000 sfu
Latest Penticton Noon Flux: 148 sfu
Description: A 10cm radio burst indicates that the electromagnetic burst associated with a solar flare at the 10cm wavelength was double or greater than the initial 10cm radio background. This can be indicative of significant radio noise in association with a solar flare. This noise is generally short-lived but can cause interference for sensitive receivers including radar, GPS, and satellite communications.

  1. 75 Meter Nets active and handling plenty of formal traffic in the central NY area…It's been a while since I checked in to any of them, back when I had digs where I could pump rf into the the base of a 32 foot wire resonating over the soggy shoreline of the AuSable and arcing out toward my old ham buddies in the Syracuse-Utica area on NYPON and other formal HF nets. The Empire Slow Speed (ESS) cw (morse code) net was my favorite. Boy do I miss being able to enter the action.
Im stuck now in the middle apartment of a triplex in Downtown AuSable now, Listening only…don't dare transmit being surrounded by TV watchers overhead and next door so close.
Before IRENE I had wire in a tree and solar powered Heathkits generating RF to join in, but no more. So now
I have a "hamstick" angling out of a hot-water radiator that's ok for listening in, but that's all. I reminds me somewhat of a mythological character, "Tantalous."
    starving while surrounded by food.

  2. Hey, maybe, finally, X1.1, earth directed, ….
Not Carrington, but at least something. I'll be checking for aurora tonight if it's clear. Tubes, not chips will be glowing in MY digs…as usual. Nothing special. Ug Ug.. (Hero complex again). Relax Mark, Chill
out, BUT! Finish fixing at least one of those tube sets.
    Thanks for being here. mc
