Spectacular 18th paroxysm at Mt. Etna, Italy
Spectacular lava bubbles over the New SE crater announced 18th paroxysm of Mt. Etna in Italy. The eruption continues to increase and there are now at least 2 vents producing lava fountains. A tall ash plume triggered the temporary airspace closure over Catania.
Although visibility was strongly hampered by weather clouds, according to INGV Catania, it could be ascertained that this episode produced lava fountains and an eruption column charged with pyroclastic material that was blown by the wind to the northeast. Activity is currently diminishing and lava flows continue to advance to the south and SE.
