Tropical Storm “Nuri” formed in Philippine Sea

Tropical depression in the western North Pacific Ocean developed into Tropical Storm Nuri on October 31, 2014. At 09:00 UTC on October 31, 2014, Nuri had maximum sustained winds near 55 km/h (34 mph). It was centered about 391 km (243 miles) north-northwest of Yap. The system was moving westward at speed of 15 km/h (9 mph).

Currently, Nuri is a tropical cyclone with a maximum sustained wind speed of 102 km/h (64 mph) and gusts up to 130 km/h (81 mph). Nuri will miss Philippines, but it will still bring rough surf and strong rip currents to the eastern shores of the Philippines. Low vertical wind shear and warm sea surface temperatures in Philippine Sea will strengthen the system on its northeastward track.

Nuri is forecast to reach Category 4 typhoon strength. JTWC forecasts maximum sustainable winds of 225 km/h (140 mph), gusting up to 270 km/h (168 mph) by late November 4, 2014.

Interaction with cold front from East China Sea, moving through Japan, could slow down the system.
