Shallow M6.2 earthquake registered in Prince Edward Islands region

A strong and shallow earthquake measuring M6.2 on the Richter scale was registered in Prince Edward Islands region (Prince Edward Fracture Zone, off the coast of South Africa) on November 17, 2014 at 16:52 UTC. USGS is reporting depth of 9.4 km (5.9 miles). EMSC is reporting M6.2 at depth of 33 km.

Epicenter was located 307 km (191 miles) W of Marion Island, Prince Edward Islands and 1 550 km (963 miles) SSE of Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

There are no people living within 100 km radius. The only human inhabitants of Prince Edward Islands are the staff of a meteorological and biological research station run by the South African National Antarctic Programme on Marion Island.

USGS issued green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
