Remnants of Winter Storm “Jonas” bring coastal flooding and strong winds to parts of Ireland

The remnants of Winter Storm "Jonas" which wreaked havoc across the US East Coast have crossed the Atlantic Ocean and slammed into Ireland on January 26, 2016. The strong Atlantic low brought rainstorms accompanied with strong gales and caused coastal flooding in portions of the country.

The south and south-west parts of Ireland were hit particularly hard, and the worst affected was the Munster region, local media reports. Thousands of homes have been cut off the power supplies as high winds set in, 604 of them in Cork alone, and 239 in Milltown, Kerry. Another 200 homes have been without power in Kilshanny and Garryspillane, in Limerick and Clare, while 126 are located in the Westmeath county.

Met Éireann issued a yellow warning for coastal flooding and strong winds for Wexford, Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Waterford, on January 25.

Wing gusts reaching 110 km/h (68.4 mph) have been experienced in some regions, and further strong gales are expected to follow throughout the evening while another front is making its way toward the west coast on January 27.

Several feet of water flooded the Salthill's Toft carpark and other parts of the promenade in Galway on the morning of January 26. The local police have warned the residents to remain alert and exercise extreme caution while driving on coastal roads during flooding and strong wind gusts.
