Floods and landslides that hit Sao Paulo metropolitan region, Brazil on March 10 and 11, 2016 claimed lives of at least 21 people. An unknown number of people is still missing.

Torrential rain that hit the region on March 10 and continued into March 11 has thrown Brazil's largest city into chaos. A landslide that hit Sao Paulo's suburb of Mairipora killed four people and injured 7. According to authorities, eight people are still missing in this municipality.

A landslide that hit Francisco de Morato and Itepavi killed 13 people. Two people drowned in the town of Guarulhos and another two in Cajamar.

Firefighters worked through the early hours at different points around Sao Paulo, many of which were flooded due to the heavy rains that caused canals and rivers to overflow, authorities told local media.

More rain and landslides are expected in the coming days. Authorities advised people living in high-risk areas to evacuate.
