A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.1 hit South Indian Ocean at 07:42 UTC on August 1, 2016. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles). EMSC is reporting mb6.1 at a depth of 60 km (37.3 miles).
According to the USGS, the epicenter was located 2025.1 km (1258.3 miles) E of Port Mathurin and 2580.9 km (1603.7 miles) E of Bel Air Rivière Sèche, Mauritius.
There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles). Tsunami is not expected.
USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
There are likely to be no affected structures in this region.
