Storm Henk wreaks havoc across UK, leaving one dead and thousands without power

Storm Henk hit parts of the United Kingdom on January 2 and 3, 2024, leaving at least one person dead and another injured. The storm brought winds of up to 150 km/ (94 mph) and heavy rain, closing several major roads and train lines, and leaving as many as 10000 homes without power. Hundreds of flood warnings are in place across England, Scotland and Wales.

As a result, the UK Met Office has issued the first ever Red warning for exceptional heat. The current record high temperature in the UK is 38.7 °C (101.6 °F), set in Cambridge in 2019.

The UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the 9% rise in the consumer price index is the highest since records began in 1989, surpassing the 8.4% annual rise in March 1992. The office estimates that inflation would have been higher sometime around 1982.
