Strong 6.9 earthquake hits Solomon Islands

A strong M6.9 earthquake hit 76 km (47 miles) west of Kira Kira near San Cristobal, Solomon Islands (10.349°S, 161.233°E) at 04:17 UTC on April 23, 2011. The quake hit at depth of 81.6 km.

Residents on the mainland said they felt a sharp jolt but emergency services said there was no immediate evidence of damage although reports were still being sought from outlying islands. The Solomon Islands lie in the “Pacific Ring of fire“ – a highly active earthquake zone, and regularly experiences strong tremors.
