Huge swells struck roads, villages and hotels along the Coral Coast leaving people dashing for high ground this morning.

The swells according to the Fiji Meteorological Office, is a result of a storm surge from the huge swells generated by the low depression hovering over the Fiji group at the moment. The swells left debris along the Cuvu Back Road outside Sigatoka (Old Queen’s Highway), sweeping belongings out to sea and temporarily closing the crossing from mainland to Yanuca Island where the famous Fijian Resort is situated.

At Momi Bay, Seashell on Momi Resort the swell was huge this morning. Surfers staying at the hotel talked about huge swells at one of the world’s top ten reef breaks, Cloudbreak and the other breaks close by including the Namotu Lefts and Wilkes Passage. (FijiLive)

A trough of low pressure remains over Fiji and is slowly moving northwards. Meanwhile, a high pressure system to the far southwest directs a moderate to fresh southeast winds over the group. Southeasterly winds 15 to 20 knots. Moderate seas. Heavy southerly swells. Poor visibility in areas of heavy rain and thunderstorms. (FijiMeteorogicalService)
