Shallow M6.2 earthquake hits Jujuy, Argentina

A shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.2 has struck Argentina at 11:12 UTC on April 6, 2011. The agency is reporting a depth of 9.5 km (5.9 miles)

According to the USGS, the epicenter was located 106 km (65 miles) E of San Salvador de Jujuy, 129 km (80 miles) N of El Quebrachal, Salta and 135 km (83 miles) ENE of Salta, Argentina (24.181°S, 64.250°W). The closest villages were San Rafael and La Ronda. The nearest big city is San Salvador de Jujuy.

San Pedro de Jujuy is the second most populated city of the Jujuy province and is located approx. 60 km from the epicenter. People in the quake area have reported that the shaking lasted for about 10 seconds.  

The earthquake was also felt in Asuncion, Paraguay, and in the southern part of Bolivia.
