Deadly storm hits Algeria
Severe storms swept across northeast Algeria this weekend. There was widespread damage as violent storms swept across the northeast of the country, killing 20 people and injuring 56. The worst conditions appeared in regions of Tebessa, Tlemcen and M’sila. Torrential rains with thunderstorms and high winds wreck havoc across 22 of the country’s 48 districts in northeastern regions.
Two days of heavy rains caused floodings. The civil protection services also intervened following the infiltration of rainwater in the provinces of Algiers, Guelma, Skikda, Jijel, and Khenchela for clearing sludge, borders from a river at a place called “Timedouane” in the locality of Sidi Abdelaziz.
The storm, a deep area of low pressure, developed in the western side of the Mediterranean Sea late last week. It brought heavy rains to the French Riviera and the southeastern fringes of Spain. System moved eastwards. As the low pressure region drifted across Italy and the Adriatic Sea, it helped firefighters in Croatia, Bosnia and Montenegro in battles with forest fires.
