Sadal village completely submerged by a landslide, Jammu and Kashmir

Landslide caused by heavy monsoon rains has completely submerged Sadal village in Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, September 9, 2014.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Udhampur, Khalil Ahmed Poswal said around 22 to 23 houses were buried in the debris, seven dead bodies have been recovered and 31 people are still missing.

"We are facing problem because the houses have been dislocated at about 400 meters from their original location," he added.

Days of heavy rain triggered floods and landslides across the disputed Himalayan region and claimed lives of at least 450 people in India and Pakistan. More than 1 million people were cut off from basic services.

The worst flooding to hit Kashmir in 60 years reached massive proportions on September 5 and although the flood waters are now receding further landslides are possible.

Monsoon rains across South Asia are usual from June to September and are vital for its agriculture, however, it seems the incidence of extreme events, either too much rain, or too little, over a limited period of time, is becoming more widespread in recent years. Read more:​ India's monsoon rains are changing…
