Mud and rocks loosened by heavy rains swept down the Kijejete Hill located in the western Gitaza town near Lake Tanganyika, Burundi (Africa) on March 29, 2015 destroying hundreds of homes and killing at least 10 people.

The landslide destroyed bridges, two schools, a clinic, church and more than 600 houses.

An unknown number of people is still missing and officials say all indications suggest the death toll will be considerably high.

Administrator of Muhuta commune Jonathan Nkeshimana said that hectares of cassava and banana crops were also swept away. He continued that a distance of at least 5 km of the road is covered by the rocks and stones, obstructing the traffic on the Bujumbura-Rumonge road. (Xinhua)

Some 3 000 people have been left homeless.

Reports from the Democratic Republic of Congo say there have been similar problems across the border. According to BBC, UN-backed Radio Okapi says 14 people have been killed on the Congolese side of Lake Tanganyika.
