Large ocean swell hits Pacific coast of Central and South America

Strong waves are lashing the Pacific coast from Mexico to Chile since May 2, 2015. According to media reports, at least three people were killed, one is missing and hundreds had to evacuate from the coastline.

One person was swept away in Panama by strong waves that prompted an alert from authorities on Saturday, May 2, 2015. In Mexico, on man drowned on a beach in Acapulco while waves more than 4 meters high hit seaside homes and flooded streets of the city, AFP reports.

Chile's emergency office said one European tourist was swept away and another person was injured.

A teenager, aged 14, is missing in El Salvador.

Mexican authorities said that the sea swell is produced yearly by large storms and winds offshore and is likely to affect the coast for the next four days.
