Multiple funnel clouds and waterspouts spotted on Chesapeake Bay, US
Multiple funnel clouds and waterspouts were observed near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, off the coast of Annapolis, Maryland, US on Friday, July 17, 2015. Additionally, a funnel cloud associated with thunderstorm was also seen in Virginia Beach.
According to the The Washington Post, eyewitnesses said numerous funnel clouds lined up along a broad expanse of cumulus clouds splitting the Chesapeake Bay from north to south. They were seen both from the Bay Bridge and adjacent shores. They were likely in contact with the water at times, classifying them as waterspouts.
“At least six waterspouts formed over the Chesapeake Bay below the Bay Bridge this morning,” said the Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) on its Facebook page. “One touched down right on top of a NRP patrol boat.”
Baltimore meteorologist Justin Berk received video of at least one funnel near the Bay Bridge from Virginia Greene, taken from inside a car between 08:00 and 09:00 local time:
